18 pilots in four categories competed in the 2006
Pennsylvania Aquatic Championships (those who were there feel free to share the
punch line). Everyone managed two flights in spite of low morning clouds each
day, a stiff crosswind on Saturday, and freshly sprayed Farmer's Miracle-Grow on
Friday.
With everyone's hard work, we averaged 6 flights
per hour across all categories when conditions allowed. We could not have
accomplished this without the hard work of all of our volunteers. A heartfelt
Thank You to our Registrars Priss Bashore and Nancy Abt, our Starter Keith
Doyne, our Chief Judges Bob (Smokey) Minkus and Greg (Weatherman) Dungan, our
Volunteer Coordinator Ray Harris, our 'whatever you need' guy Larry (Got Enough
Trophies) Bashore, the best workaholic on the planet Craig (Gadget) Wisman and
eternal optomist Debby (Boundary's nicer than the Amazon) Wisman. Also, thank
you to Bob and Minerva Eno for all the work they do to maintain our relationship
with the neighboring farmers.
Congratulations to all our competitors. Thank you
for your patience, and most importantly, thank you for your understanding with
the scoring difficulties at the end.
Thank you to our hosts at Flying Tigers for the use
of the field, and the Maytown Sport Parachute Club for the use of their hangar
and for ceasing operations for the duration of our event.
Congratulations to Mark Shaw. Not
only was he our Highest Scoring First Time Sportsman, but managed First Place as
well.
When appropriate, we present the 'Eno Award for
Sportsmanship'. This year I am proud to announce that it has been presented to
Gil Stout of Flying Tigers (the FBO). Gil went above and beyond spending most of
Sunday to take care of a few maintenance issues that arose. Thank you Gil. You
have always been good to our Chapter and we want you to know how sincerely we
appreciate it.
On to the results...

The 2006 PA Aerobatic Championships at Donegal
Springs is just weeks away. Enclosed you will find a copy of the flyer
for the contest. Please feel free to share it with your fellow aviation
enthusiasts.
The success of our contest has always been directly related to the
quality of our volunteers. Many have contributed already, from shirt
design to ordering trophies and arranging for the port-a-pots, but
there is still plenty left to do. I have already spoken to many of you
about contributing again this year, and will be contacting many more in
the coming weeks.
For those who have found and enjoy having that one thing they bring to
the contest, thank you. I know I can count on having a Friday night
burger and hotdog cook; hot coffee in the morning; a cooler full of
water, soft drinks and after sunset beverages; A clean site with
available hangar space; efficient and cheerful Registrars; fruit and
snacks available all day and a very accomodating group of skydivers
willing to let us take over their hangar for the weekend. In spite of
that, there is still more we need. We need side dishes, snacks and
deserts for the Friday night potluck. We need people available to drive
pilots to their hotels. We need need others willing to run for water or
supplies as required and to prepare meals for the judges. Please find
time to help our Chapter put on the best contest in the Northeast by
helping where you can. Find me, and I'll find something for you to do.
Here is a brief schedule listing where we need people to help:
Wednesday May 31st - Box setup - 5:30PM at Donegal Springs.
Friday afternoon - People to make supply runs for those things we forgot.
Friday 7:30PM - Potluck dinner - Bring a side dish, entree, desert, or snack.
Friday 8:30PM - Drivers available to take pilots to their hotels
Saturday noon - lunch preparers and drivers to take pilots or pickup meals.
Saturday night - Contest dinner, drivers for pilots.
Sunday noon - lunch preparers and drivers to take pilots or pickup meals.
Sunday afternoon - Site cleanup.
I hope to see you all at the contest, and look forward to a successful
event. Please call me at 267-246-1307 if you have questions or
comments, and especially if you can help out with any of the above
needs.
See you at Maytown!

For the second time in the last four years, we had a significant
snowfall the day of our annual Winter Party. In consult with most of
the 22 members who had signed up for the dinner, we have chosen to
reschedule the event. The new date will be March 18th at the same
location, the Log Cabin Restaurant in Lancaster. I hope this new date
will work for everyone who signed up previously. Enclosed is a revised
flyer with the specifics. The menu has not changed and we will hold the
reservations for those members who signed up in anticipation of you
being able to attend. If not, please let me know and we will return
your payment.
Thank you to those who have submitted your dues for 2006. The response
has been good and I hope we can get everyone renewed without another
scourge of the red dot...
Our friends at IAC Chapter 52 will be holding Introductory and Advanced
Judges schools the weekend of April 1-2, 2006. The location will be
Flying W airport (N14) in Medford, NJ. Please contact Doug Lovell for
more information (judge@wbreeze.com). As you know, having enough
current Judges available can make or break a contest. If you have
considered becoming a Judge, or just need to pass your recurrency test,
the location couldn't be better. Not only is Flying W close to most of
us, but they have restaurant and hotel accomodations on the field.
On a related note, the 2006 IAC Rule Book is now available for download
in the members section of the IAC website (www.iac.org). It's
companion, The FAI Catalog, is essentially unchanged from 2005 with the
exception of the 8.55 and 8.56 figures. These changes can be downloaded
from http://www.fai.org/aerobatics/documents.
Lastly, our Regional Director, Greg Dungan, is anxious to hear your
input, comments or concerns. In his words "As it stands right now,
there is no easy way for a Regional Director to contact individual
Members in their Region to discuss their ideas and concerns.
Likewise, individual IAC Members have a difficult time knowing how to
contact their IAC Regional Director. So it has been my
observation while attending IAC Board meetings over the last few years
as the Judging Program Chairman that most IAC Regional Directors really
have little contact with the their Members. Armed with only
anecdotal information and their own personal opinions, an IAC Regional
Director cannot truly be an advocate for Regional concerns. I do
not want this to happen during my tenure as the Northeast Regional
Director! It was for that reason that shortly after winning
election, I asked IAC HQ for a contact list for the Northeast
Region. However, as I pointed out above, no such animal currently
exists! Therefore, I have asked the IAC President and Executive
Director to work with EAA staff to implement a system to provide better
communications between Regional Directors, their Regional Members, and
IAC HQ."
To help close the loop, Greg's contact information follows. Please feel
free to use this valuable asset within our Chapter, or if you prefer, I
would be glad to present issues on your behalf.

Greetings and welcome to the 2006 IAC Chapter 58 calendar year. I am pleased to announce the Officers for 2006:
| President |
JD Johnson |
| Vice-President |
Craig Wisman |
| Treasurer |
Deb Wisman |
| Secretary |
Keith Doyne |
In the tradition of the new year, I submit
my Chapter resolution for this year will be to organize more flying and
social activities than we have managed in the last few, starting with
the Winter Party at the Log Cabin restaurant in Lancaster, PA on
February 11th. I hope you have already received your invitation in the
Chapter Dues and Information packet recently mailed. The Winter Party
is always a great opportunity to meet with other members, renew
existing friendships, and create new ones. If you have not received the
mailing, or have misplaced it, you can download a copy of the
reservation form at www.iac58.org under the 'calendar' section. Please
send your reservation and dinner selection to Amy by February 8th.
I also want to improve Chapter
communications. Included in the Dues and Information packet is a form
for updating your member information. Please provide us with your
current phone number and if you have and one, your email address, so we
can start a Chapter phone tree and email distribution list.
Additionally, I would like to create more
opportunities for practice and critique this year. We had a few last
year, however the irregular schedule may have contributed to the low
attendance. Our Officers will be planning a calendar of activities
which will be published on the website and in the calendar section of
the newsletter.
Lastly, I would like to start a monthly
fly-in/drive-in cookout at my hangar in Doylestown (KDYL) on the first
Saturday of every month between April and September (contest weekends
excluded). We have a very diverse chapter, both professionaly and
geographically, and I would like to offer a few more 'eastern PA'
activities for our members.
As always, please continue to give me your feedback and suggestions..

I'd like to start this month by thanking
Craig Wisman and Keith Doyne for covering my portion of the newsletter
duties while I was on hiatas. I really appreciate their help while I
worked through the issues of a growing family.
As you may know, each year the Maytown Sport
Parachute Club allows us to use a portion of their facilities and
suspends operations for the duration of the PA Aerobatic Championships.
By way of 'Thank You', we try to bring them pilots, friends and
relatives for an introductory jump lesson, and afterwards, provide a
nice party for the club members. Craig organized the combined jump day
and party at Donegal Springs. I understand it was a success and several
people got to jump after the clouds cleared.
There will not be a September meeting since
it falls on the same weekend as the Warrenton, VA Contest, so the next
Chapter meeting will be 10:00AM October 15th at Donegal Springs. At the
October meeting we will be accepting nominations for Chapter Officers
for 2006. If you would like to become involved in the operations of our
Chapter, please let me know.
In November, we will be holding our annual
Election Dinner Meeting. Once again, we hope to hold it at the Log
Cabin Restaurant in Lancaster. It has always been a well attended and
enjoyable evening. Specific information will be included in next months
newsletter.

you have questions or comments, and especially if you can help out with
any of the above needs.
See you at Maytown!

We had a great turnout for our first Practice session
of the year at Donegal Springs on March 19th. We also signed up a
couple new members. Please welcome Ron Chadwick and Steve Seidel to our
Chapter. Ron flies a Pitts S2-B, and Steve flies a Pitts S2-A.
Our April meeting will be one week later than usual on April 23rd to
avoid a conflict with Sun-N-Fun in Lakeland, Florida. It will be a
combined Contest Planning Meeting and picnic at my hangar in Doylestown
on April 23rd. Everyone is welcome, and please drop me an email
(jjohnson@iac58.org) or a call (267-246-1307) if you think you will be
able to attend. It sounds like Amy will be busy making lots of homemade
Pierogies to compliment the usual hamburgers and hotdogs. Please join
us at hangar D-9 if you can.
We have decided to schedule our Judges School for sometime in July. We
realize this is later than usual for Judges Schools. Our hope is that
we can provide training to those who become interested in judging after
the first few contests of the season, as well as the Judges who need
recertification in the current year. We will be deciding on a date for
the School at the April meeting and will be sure to promote it in the
newsletter and on the web at www.iac.org.
For those of you have not had the opportunity to remit your dues, this
will be the last newsletter you receive. To continue uninterrupted
delivery, please send your $25 Individual or $30 Family Membership to:
IAC Chapter 58
PO Box 2247
Harrisburg, PA 17105
I hope to see many of you at my hangar next weekend, but for now, I'm off to Sun-n-Fun.
Thank you,
-JD

We had a very productive and well attended meeting at
Donegal Springs on February 19th. In addition to our scheduled
Membership Meeting, we had the pleasure of seeing the new aircraft two
of our Chapter members have acquired; Dennis Thompson's Edge 540, and
our newest Chapter Member Alex Belov's Yak 55M. Both are very nice
aircraft sporting Red, White, and Blue paint schemes. They both plan to
attend our June contest, so you should be able to see them first hand.
Next month's meeting, March 19th, will be a combined meeting and
practice session at Donegal Springs. This will be a great opportunity
for Pilots to get a head start on the contest season with some ground
critique, and for Judges to sharpen their eyes before sitting in the
chair for the first time. The meeting will be at 10:00AM, and the box
will be open immediately thereafter. Please don't forget your chairs or
a handheld radio to help out.
Planning for our annual contest, the Pennsylvania Aerobatic
Championships, is coming along nicely. I spoke with Jay Stout at Flying
Tigers, and they have graciously accepted our request to hold the
Contest at Donegal Springs again this year. The dates will be June 3rd,
4th, and 5th. The contest has been posted on the IAC website
(www.iac.org) and should soon be listed in Sport Aerobatics magazine. I
will be holding a combined Contest Planning Meeting and picnic at my
hangar in Doylestown on April 23rd. Everyone is welcome, and please
drop me an email (jjohnson@iac58.org) or a call (267-246-1307) if you
think you will be able to attend. Amy makes some awesome homemade
Pierogies to compliment the usual hamburgers and hotdogs, and I'd hate
to run out if we don't bring enough! Please note that the date is one
week after our normal 3rd Saturday meeting date to avoid a conflict
with the annual Sun-n-Fun Fly-in in Lakeland Florida.
We are currently in the process of organizing a party with the Maytown
Sport Parachute Club for sometime in the summer and hope to offer the
option of an emergency egress familiarity session, otherwise known as a
'skydive', at the event. If you would like to take advantage of the
opportunity to jump out of a perfectly good airplane, just to know that
you can, please contact Craig Wisman at cwisman@aol.com.
As for the rest of our upcoming events, please see the calendar
enclosed monthly in the newsletter, or our website, www.iac58.org.
I look forward to seeing you all soon at one of our Chapter events. It
is you who make our Chapter strong, a strength combined of numbers and
selfless volunteerism. Please express your commitment to our Chapter by
getting your dues in. You can remit your $25 Individual or $30 Family
Membership to:
IAC Chapter 58
PO Box 2247
Harrisburg, PA 17105
Thank you,

Happy New Year! Our Annual Winter Party at the Log
Cabin Restaurant was once again a resounding success and enjoyed by
all. In spite of the surroundings, we did manage to conduct some
Chapter business.
Larry and Priss provided the results of the election and I am happy to report that the Officers for 2005 are:
JD Johnson President
Craig Wisman Vice President
Deborah Wisman Treasurer
Keith Doyne Secretary
I presented the traditional service awards to each of the Officers for
their support last year, and sincerely appreciate their efforts.
I was also proud to present the 2003 Harold E. Neumann Award for
Outstanding Contribution as a Chief Judge to Ray Rose. The Award is
given annually for outstanding contribution as a Chief Judge during the
prior contest year. General guidelines, though not requirements, for
the award include a person known for leadership qualities and fairness
on the judges line. This person conducts each contest flight in a
professional manner and is widely respected for his or her knowledge
and experience of IAC rules and judging criteria.
Treasurer Wisman reported that we are financially sound and should be in good shape for the Contest this year.
It was decided that the first business meeting of the year would be 10:00AM February 19th at Donegal Springs.
It was further decided that the Chapter would offer to host a Judges
School once again this year. I will be contacting the Judges School
Coordinator to select a date, and find a suitable location. If you
would like to assist with the school coordination, please contact me.
Lastly, send in your dues. I may not be the dot-meister, but I know where he lives...
-JD
